## What is Port Wine?

Port wine is a fortified wine produced in the protected **Douro wine region in northern Portugal**.

During fermentation, grape spirit is added to stop the fermentation process. This preserves some of the natural residual sugar while increasing the alcohol content, typically to around 19 to 22 percent.

Different production and ageing methods result in a wide variety of Port wine styles.

Some of the best-known styles include:

- **Ruby Port** – fruit-driven and generally enjoyed young
- **Tawny Port** – aged for longer periods in wooden barrels
- **Vintage Port** – produced from an exceptional vintage and suitable for long bottle ageing
- **Late Bottled Vintage (LBV)** – a vintage-dated Port with extended ageing before bottling
- **Colheita** – a Tawny Port from a single vintage
- **White Port** – produced from white grape varieties
- **Rose Port** – a modern and fruity style of Port

## The Douro Valley

Port wine originates from the **Douro Valley in northern Portugal**.

The steep, terraced vineyards along the Douro River form one of Europe's most distinctive wine landscapes. The grapes grown here are used to produce Port wine.

Traditionally, the finished wine was transported down the Douro River to **Vila Nova de Gaia**, where many of the historic Port houses have their ageing cellars.
