Ruby

Ruby port is a young, fruity red port from the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is usually aged in casks for just 2 to 3 years, which gives it its characteristic deep red to ruby-red colour. The short ageing period ensures that the fresh fruit flavours are preserved. On the palate, it is reminiscent of cherries, plums and berries, and impresses with its full-bodied sweetness and soft tannins. Compared to Tawny port, Ruby port is less oxidised and comes across as fresher and fruitier.

Tawny

Tawny port is a matured variety of port from the Douro Valley in Portugal. Unlike ruby port, it is aged for several years in wooden casks, during which time contact with oxygen gives it a lighter, amber to golden-brown colour. During maturation, complex aromas develop, reminiscent of nuts, caramel, dried fruit and spices.

On the palate, Tawny Port is generally smoother and less fruity than Ruby Port. It is characterised by its delicate, nutty notes, a pleasant sweetness and an elegant structure. Particularly high-quality Tawny Ports are often sold with an age statement such as 10, 20, 30 or 40 years, which indicates the average ageing period.

White

White port is a light-coloured variety of port produced from white grapes in Portugal’s Douro Valley. It is usually aged in stainless-steel tanks or wooden casks and, depending on the style, can be dry, semi-dry or sweet. Its pale colour and fresh aromas set it apart clearly from red port varieties.

On the palate, white port often displays notes of citrus fruits, apples, honey, almonds and tropical fruits. Dry varieties are lighter and fresher, whilst sweet varieties are fuller-bodied and more harmonious. The alcohol content is usually around 19 to 20 % vol. White port is served well chilled at around 8 to 12 °C and is particularly suitable as an aperitif.

Rosé

Rosé port is a modern variation of port wine from the Douro Valley in Portugal. It is made from red grapes, though the contact with the grape skins is shorter than with classic red ports. This gives it its typical pink to light red colour and a lighter, fresher character.
