The winegrowing history claimed by Bulas predates the present company by centuries. According to the house, documents from 1256 refer to wine production in the Ceira area near Gouvinhas. The present estates therefore lie in a part of the Douro that has been used for agriculture and vines for centuries. Quinta FozCeira and Quinta da Costa de Baixo are on the right bank of the Douro in the Cima Corgo. Pombaline boundary markers survive on the properties, recalling the historic demarcation of the Douro wine region.
The family estates built up their own wine stocks over generations. Particularly important for Port is the historical cask inventory. Quinta da Costa de Baixo has an old cellar and storage complex that Bulas dates to 1840. Very old cask wines preserved through generations now provide the basis for small special bottlings.
The modern business structure dates to 2013. Official documentation for EU-supported internationalisation projects describes Bulas Family Estates, Lda. as a micro-company founded that year in Sabrosa. Quinta da Costa de Baixo and Quinta FozCeira are situated around Gouvinhas in the Cima Corgo. The official account describes the vineyards as holding the highest quality classification, class A. Old vineyards are traditional mixed plantings of indigenous varieties. Newer parcels include Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca together with other typical Douro grapes.
Bulas emphasises parcel-based management and small production lots. Traditional methods are combined with controlled cellar technology. Several Ports use lagares and foot treading. Depending on the wine, fermentation takes place in stainless-steel vessels or stainless-steel lagares under temperature control and is stopped by adding grape spirit.
Ruby and Vintage styles are handled to preserve fruit. Ruby Reserve matures for an average of three years in stainless steel, according to the producer. The documented 2016 LBV spent four years in stainless steel, while Vintage Ports can be bottled after roughly two years. Wood plays the central role in oxidative styles, with Tawnies matured in French and in some cases American oak.
The Bulas portfolio is unusually broad. The Ruby side includes Ruby Reserve, Late Bottled Vintage and several Vintage releases. These wines emphasise fruit and structure, with Vintage intended for extended bottle development.
The Tawny range extends from Tawny Reserve through 10, 20, 30 and 40 Years Tawny to Very Old Tawny. Tawny Reserve averages about seven years of maturation. With increasing age, oxidative characters such as nuts, dried fruit, caramel and spice become more prominent. The Very Old Tawny is particularly unusual, drawing on ancient cask stocks at Quinta da Costa de Baixo. Bulas states an average age of about 100 years for the wines in the blend and a release of only 200 numbered bottles.
White Port is another distinct pillar. Alongside Dry White and White Reserve, the house offers age-indicated mature white Ports. The official range lists Dry White 10, 20 and 30 Years as well as White 10, 20 and 30 Years, covering both fresher aperitif styles and markedly oxidative mature white Ports.
