History

Messias was founded in 1926 by Messias Baptista, who chaired the company until 1973. It remained in family ownership and developed into a producer active in several Portuguese regions. Its headquarters are in Mealhada in Bairrada.

Quinta do Cachão became the key property for Port. The first vineyards there were planted in 1845 by Barão do Seixo. The estate later passed to the Afonso Cabral family. Messias acquired it in 1956 and undertook extensive renovation. In 1958 the neighbouring Quinta do Rei was purchased from Gonzalez Byass.

The connection between Quinta do Cachão and Messias is important in the house's Port history. Specialist sources document that wines sold under Quinta do Cachão were for many years sometimes identical to those sold as Messias. In 2009 two different Vintage Ports were produced in the same year for the first time, one under Messias and one under Quinta do Cachão.

Vineyards, quintas and production

Quinta do Cachão near Ferradosa covers about 200 ha according to the producer, roughly half planted with vines. The vineyards carry the top Douro A classification and are based mainly on schist soils.

Important red varieties include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinto Cão. White varieties include Malvasia Fina and Rabigato. Grapes are used for both Port and Douro DOC.

Messias combines controlled-temperature fermentation with traditional fortification. Depending on style, ageing takes place in wood. LBV matures for several years in oak and is bottled between the fourth and sixth year. Colheitas and older Tawny styles remain in wood much longer. Some historical bottlings, such as Limited Edition 1964, were fermented in granite lagares.

Style and Port wines

Messias covers a broad range of Port styles. The classic range includes Ruby, Tawny, White and Special Reserve. LBV and Vintage Ports add darker fruit, tannin and greater bottle-ageing potential.

Wood-aged Ports are an important focus. Messias offers 10, 20, 30 and 40 Years Old Tawnies. With increasing age, the producer describes more nut, spice and wood characters and stronger oxidative development. Colheitas such as 1980 and historical special releases complement the range.

The portfolio therefore combines youthful fruit-driven Ports with long-aged oxidative styles.

Significance and special features

Messias is notable because Port forms part of a broad Portuguese wine business rather than a stand-alone activity. At the same time, Quinta do Cachão gives the company a clearly defined Douro base with its own history.

Family continuity since 1926 and ownership of Quinta do Cachão since 1956 give the house a distinct identity. The parallel use of the Messias and Quinta do Cachão names and the broad stock of aged Tawny and Colheita Ports are especially noteworthy.
