Ramos Pinto is one of Portugal's historic Port houses. Founded in 1880 by Adriano Ramos Pinto, the company developed a distinctive identity early on and built its reputation around quality and a close relationship with the Douro vineyards. Important Ramos Pinto estates and vineyards include Quinta de Ervamoira, Quinta do Bom Retiro, Quinta dos Bons Ares and Quinta da Urtiga. Their different elevations, soils and microclimates provide a broad range of conditions for traditional Douro grape varieties.
Quinta de Ervamoira, in the Douro Superior, is important for both Port and Douro wines. Quinta do Bom Retiro also plays a significant role in Port production, while Vinha da Urtiga is one of the house's particularly distinctive historic vineyards.
Ramos Pinto produces several classic styles of Port, including Ruby and Tawny styles, Late Bottled Vintage and Vintage Port. For premium wines, fruit from the company's own estates is an important part of production. The 2019 LBV, for example, uses grapes from Quinta de Ervamoira and Quinta do Bom Retiro and is matured in large wooden vats in Vila Nova de Gaia.
The company also produces Douro DOC wines. Its well-known Duas Quintas range expresses, among other things, the contrasting characteristics of Quinta de Ervamoira and Quinta dos Bons Ares.
Ramos Pinto combines traditional winemaking with detailed vineyard management. Altitude, indigenous grape varieties and individual vineyard parcels are important elements of its approach. Red varieties used across the portfolio include Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, Tinto Cao and Sousao.
